Will Smith has posted an emotional video on social networks expressing regret for the slap at the Oscars.
The actor caused controversy at this year's ceremony after punching Chris Rock on stage after a joke about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and her looks . Smith released a statement on Instagram apologizing , but has since gone silent.
The nearly six-minute video , posted on his YouTube channel and Instagram page, shows Will Smith answering questions that have been swirling ever since, starting with why he didn't apologize to Chris Rock in his acceptance speech "The best actor".
"It's all a blur. I've contacted Chris and the message I got back is that he's not ready to talk and when he is, he'll contact me, so I want to say Chris, I'm sorry. mine was unacceptable and I'm here whenever you're ready to talk," he said.
He then takes the opportunity to apologize to Chris' mother. "One of the things about that moment, I just didn't realize, I wasn't thinking, but how many people were hurt in that moment," he said. He goes on to say that he has spent the last three months "understanding the nuances and complexities of what happened at that moment" and emphasized that there is no moment when he thinks it was "the right way to behave."
Will also clarified that Jada had nothing to do with his reaction, so she didn't tell him to do anything. "I made the choice myself based on my experiences, my history with Chris. Jada had nothing to do with it."
He then apologized to her and his family for the inconvenience he caused everyone.
"I'm truly heartbroken that I stole and tarnished your moment," he told other nominees and winners at the Oscars. When asked what he would say to those who felt let down by his behaviour, Will said that "letting people down" is his main trauma.
"I hate it when I let people down. So it hurts. It hurts me psychologically and emotionally to know that I don't match the image and impression people have of me. I am deeply sorry and I am trying to be sorry without being ashamed of myself. I am a human. I made a mistake and I'm trying not to think of myself as a failure," he added.
