French film director, screenwriter and critic Jean-Luc Godard has passed away today at the age of 91. The news that one of the most prominent figures who revolutionized French cinema has passed away was confirmed by the French media.
The Franco-Swiss director through his skill and artistic spirit succeeded in revolutionizing cinema in the late 1950s and during the 60s.
Known for his unique style in each film as well as for the display of radicalism in dialogues or subjects, Godard turned into a genius leaving an extraordinary mark on the world of cinema.
"Today we have lost an international asset, we have lost the eyes of a genius. He was the master of cinema." - said the French president, Emmanuel Macron.
Le Mépris, Bande à Part, Alphaville, Le Petit Soldat, A Woman Is a Woman, La Chinoise, Breathless, Vivre sa Vie, Cleo from 5 to 7, etc. were just some of his gems that even today, after so many years are seen by the public with the same curiosity as the first time.
Godard started out as a film critic before hiding behind the camera and doing what he would do for the rest of his life. His co-stars in Breathless: Jean Seberg and Jean-Paul Belmondo were glamorous, stylish and played so naturally while having a camera rolling with them all the time.
One of the director's muses would be Anna Karina, who would later become his wife. In 1965, Anna Karina and Godard divorced: their last project was the film "Made in USA".
Throughout his life he has been the winner of many prestigious awards for his contribution to the big screen, such as: "Golden Lion", "Cannes Jury Prize", "Honorary Cesar", "Honorary Palme d'Or", "Golden Bear" and many others.
