For a long time, well-known models and characters have spoken openly about diversity in fashion, demanding that there be no prejudice and that the beauty standards set in the past once again fall. In a way, it seems that lately, fashion houses and different companies are more open to hiring street models. The situation seems calm, but in the background the opposite is the case.
Ranked third in America's Next Top Model, model Khrystyana Kazakova felt fortunate to work in a top-notch agency. But the emotions lasted very little. Soon enough, the agency made it clear that it was not "big enough".
"I was told that if I added a few pounds, I would make more money," she says. Thus, Kazakova changed her workout routine by replacing cardio exercises with weightlifting and squats, as well as incorporating fat and protein into her diet.
Within 2 months, she added about 5 pounds, but things didn't go as expected. "They want us to have a thin waist," she says. "Before I was laid off, they told me I looked bloated."
While there is an approach to be appreciated in the face models, by Savage x Fenty for example, models say that behind the scenes, the pressure is high. They add that agencies are looking for models with slim waists, buttocks, stuffed legs, chest and shoulders; a model that refers to the body of Kim Kardashian or Jennifer Lopez.
"They want us to have thin arms, beautiful waists, while our thighs and buttocks can be whatever we want," says 22-year-old Allison Owens.
Chelsea Bonner, a former model and founder of Bella Menagement, says the approach to herding models is both positive on one hand and double standards on the other. ?An idea has been created that can hardly be changed. Colt models are allowed as long as they have a thin waist and no cellulite. "
She adds that the pressure is more terrible on models that have an intermediate weight, as they constantly vary depending on the agency.
Modeleleine Ours, who started modeling two years ago, says her experience has not been as simple as it seems. "People make fun of the models because they look like we don't have much work or diet, but it's all a big misunderstanding."
