A man, who was serving a house arrest sentence, went to a police station and asked to be put in jail because life at home with his wife was unbearable, the carabinieri said.
The 30-year-old Albanian, who lives in Guidonia Montecelio near Rome, "could no longer afford the forced cohabitation with his wife", it is said in a statement of the Tivoli carabinieri, according to Euronews.
"Irritated by this situation, he has preferred to escape and appear spontaneously to the carabinieri to seek punishment behind bars," they added.
The man had been under house arrest for several months for drug-related crimes and was expected to stay there for several more years, captain Francesco Giacomo Ferrante told AFP.
"He lived at home with his wife and family. He was not getting better," he added. "He said, 'Listen, my life at home has become hell, I can no longer stand it, I want to go to jail.'"
The 30-year-old was immediately arrested for violating the order and the justice authorities ordered his transfer to prison.
