Sam Asghari has spoken out about his ill-fated marriage to Britney Spears, saying that her "guardianship" (a legal status in which a court appoints a person to manage the financial and personal affairs of a minor or incapacitated person) was "the strangest thing" he was forced to deal with.
The actor confessed that he initially expected the artist's colossal fame to be the biggest obstacle he would have to face.
"One day I started learning what 'custody' was and then I was like, 'Wait a minute. I thought I was in America. What do you mean someone over the age of 18 needs permission from their parents?'" Asghari said on Kate and Oliver Hudson's podcast, "Sibling Rivalry."
"That was the hardest and strangest thing I've ever seen in my life."
The actor said the "best thing" he could do for the 43-year-old singer at the time was to support her.
“I think the best thing to do was to offer support at that moment and that's what I did, I offered as much as I could,” he said.
"This was my experience in life that I had to go through very calmly, because if you do something wrong, you say the wrong thing..."
Indeed, Asghari supported the mother-of-two during the "Free Britney" movement as she fought to break free from the shackles of a harsh court-mandated guardianship that controlled every aspect of her life for 13 years and was led by her father, Jamie Spears.

Spears was under this control from 2008 until its termination in November 2021.
The couple, who married in June 2022, announced they were filing for divorce in August 2023. They finalized their divorce in May 2024.
