A team of researchers after an experiment involving hanging rhinos upside down was awarded the Nobel Prize Ig.
The prize is named after the famous Nobel Prizes, but has nothing to do with them. This award was created by the scientific journal Annals of Improbable Research and has been awarded since 1991. The Nobel Prize Ig appreciates curious discoveries.
The winning team, made up of researchers from Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Brazil, the UK and the US, were trying to see if rhinos could be transported more safely when standing in the air while being transported with their legs tied up.
Rhinos often move, usually by land, but sometimes by air, to different parts of the African savannah. But so far little was known which method of transportation was best for the well-being of the rhino.
The study found that rhinos had higher levels of oxygen in the blood when standing upside down while being transported.
The study, which was published in January in the Journal of Wildlife Diseases, began in 2015 and included 12 rhinos weighing between 800 and 1,200 kilograms.
