A ram in South Sudan has been sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of killing a woman.
According to Eye Radio in Sudan, the ram was arrested by police earlier this month after attacking 45-year-old Adhieu Chaping. Aries repeatedly hit Ms. Chaping with her head, breaking her ribs. The 45-year-old died immediately due to the injuries received, NDTV reports.
Speaking to the media, a local representative said: "The owner is innocent and the ram is the one who committed the crime, so he deserves to be arrested and then the case will go to the ordinary court where the case can be resolved amicably."
Ladbible reports that the ram will spend the next three years in a military camp. The local court has ruled that the ram owner, Duony Manyang Dhal, will also have to hand over five cows to the victim's family.
Mr Dhal is likely to lose the ram at the end of the sentence as customary laws in the region say any pet that kills a person is then given as compensation to the victim's family.
The legal system of South Sudan, which gained independence from Sudan in 2011, is built on a combination of statutory and customary laws. South Sudan has passed dozens of laws since 2005, but their use in legal and court disputes is limited.
