It's called the "right to disconnect" and there are already some states that have passed a law that allows you not to answer calls, texts and emails after the official working hours, laid out in the contract.
Launched as an initiative after the pandemic, when working from home undermined all the limits set for working hours, extending them, France, Croatia, Portugal and Italy are some of the first countries that are taking steps to implement this law .
A similar law is also being worked on in California. In Belgium, the law is active and currently protects 65,000 employees. While in some other countries, this rule is set by the companies themselves.
But why is this law important?
Studies have proven that the work routine and the pressure exerted to work more, without being paid, has a direct impact on the mental health of employees.
In Australia, the Prime Minister called for the law, stating that "those who are not paid to work 24 hours a day should not be online and available 24 hours a day."
In an effort to overcome some societal boundaries like this, the law in question aims to help employees be happier by giving them the legal ability to sue or file a lawsuit if an employer harasses them, tasks them, or calls them. outside the official hours signed and required in their contract.
This law aims to ensure that every person can establish the right balance between work and personal life beyond it.
