If we go back in time, sometime in the 2000s, we will remember those cheap plastic sandals that lay heavily on school floors and creaked under the steps of teenagers. But today, Gen Z has changed the rules of the game - feet must be covered, at all costs!
A simple observation shows that sandals without socks are out of fashion, and today's youth no longer share bulky sneakers, socks with sandals (yes, even with Crocs!) and styles that often look like they were borrowed from their '90s dads.
But it's not just about aesthetics. For the generation that grew up with the internet, "bare feet" has become a touchy subject. It may sound ridiculous, but many young people feel that showing their toes in public is an unnecessary way to attract unwanted attention. They even have a term for bare feet: "dogs." And if someone dares to go out without socks, they can often hear shouts like: "Are you showing us your 'dogs' for free?"
On TikTok, the hashtag “dogsout” has generated millions of views, with young people posting videos mocking those who point their toes in public. On the other hand, shyness towards exposed feet is also linked to the awareness of fetishism that has polluted online spaces. “Generation Z has grown up online and has seen everything - including foot fetishism,” experts say.
Hiding your feet has become a way to maintain distance, maintain privacy, and avoid objectification. So when you see a young person in Crocs and socks, don't think it's just a style choice. In fact, it's their way of saying, "Don't get too close."
