Painful periods? Spain passes law on paid 'menstrual leave'

Spain has just passed a law allowing women with painful periods to take paid "menstrual leave", the first such law to be passed in a European country.

The bill passed by parliament is part of a wider package on sexual and reproductive rights that includes allowing anyone over the age of 16 to have an abortion or change their gender freely.

Women in Spain can take three days off (with the option of extending the report to five days) if they have painful periods.

Around the world, menstrual leave is currently only offered in a small number of countries including Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, South Korea and Zambia.

According to studies, it is believed that one third of menstruating women suffer from severe pain known as dysmenorrhea , with symptoms such as acute abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache and fever.
