Thierry Frémaux, general delegate of the Cannes Film Festival, defended the decision to open the festival with "Jeanne du Barry," a film starring Johnny Depp as Louis XV.
Frémaux said the decision to make "Jeanne du Barry" the opening film was not a controversial choice, as Depp had not been banned from working and had won the legal case against ex-wife Amber Heard.
The six-week media-broadcast trial was one of the most high-profile cases in years. Depp sued his ex-partner for defamation over a 2018 article she wrote for the Washington Post in which she described herself as a survivor of domestic abuse. He was awarded $10 million in damages.
The film, written and directed by Maïwenn Le Besco, tells the story of Jeanne du Barry, who was born and raised in poverty, but thanks to her ambition and intelligence, managed to climb the ladder of success and become the favorite of King Louis XV. The film stars Johnny Depp, Maïwenn, Pierre Richard and Noémie Lvovsky.
The film will have its world premiere as the opening film at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival on May 16 and will be released on Netflix months later.
