From brandy, to garlic and ice cream: What not to believe!

From brandy, to garlic and ice cream: What not to believe!

In situations like this of the little known coronavirus, information is the key to fighting it. Although the World Health Organization has repeatedly clarified what prevents coronavirus, articles and posts with incorrect information have not been missing.

rakia

Despite the "tips" scattered everywhere, science says "no, rakia doesn't fight coronavirus". The WHO does not support the idea that high-alcohol drinks protect you from Covid-19. Rakia has limited disinfectant properties as the amount of alcohol is below 50%. For the disinfectant to be effective, it must have at least 60% alcohol.

Garlic

Many online posts recommend that garlic has properties to prevent coronavirus. The World Health Organization says "garlic is a healthy food with antimicrobial properties", but there is no evidence that it has protective properties against coronavirus. It is well known that fruits, vegetables and water help you stay healthy, but there is no specific evidence that helps fight the new virus.

Home-made disinfectants

After the disinfectant shelves were emptied, home hand sanitizer recipes were circulated online. Experts later pointed out that for disinfectants to be effective, they should have 60-70% alcohol. Even if this amount of alcohol is provided at home, the content can turn out to be dangerous because it can irritate your hands.

Water consumption every 15 minutes

Specialists say there is "no biological mechanism" that can fight a respiratory tract virus through the stomach. However, staying hydrated is good medical advice, but it does not protect you against coronavirus infection.

Heat and avoid ice cream

In recent posts on social media, it is said that heat kills coronavirus and you should avoid ice cream. The post was alluded to as information provided by Unicef, but Unicef's Charlotte Gornitzka rejected the claim, saying it was untrue. "We know that the flu virus does not survive long outside the body in summer, but we do not know for sure how heat affects the new coronavirus," she said. So hot baths and warm fluid consumption will not change the actual body temperature, which remains stable in case you are not sick.
