In the daily tragedy that occurs in Palestine, amidst the ruins and the pain that never ceases, the story of two children captured by the lens of photojournalist Ahmed Younis has become a symbol of hope.
A few days ago, a photo touched the world and went viral all over the internet, so we think it's hard not to have come across it. It showed a little boy, with tears in his eyes, carrying his younger brother on his shoulders, leaving their destroyed home in Gaza. It was a heartbreaking moment that represented the unbearable weight of war on the innocent shoulders of children.
Ahmed Younis wrote at the time:
“A child carries his younger brother on the long road of displacement from Northern Gaza to the South, a scene that reflects the terrible humanitarian cost of war on civilians.”

A few days later, he shared another moment: a new photo, where the children are seen laughing and playing with each other, a stark contrast to the first image, but also a testament to the power of life to continue.
“Jadoua and Khaled from displacement to a pleasant moment,” Younis writes.
“In the first photograph, Jadoua carried his brother, Khaled, on his shoulder, through the harsh streets of displacement in Gaza, an image that touched the hearts of people around the world and became a symbol of a childhood bearing the burden of war.”
In the second image, they are no longer running away, but smiling like all children in the world who should have the right to live their childhood.
"Between these two photos lies the story of a generation surviving through love and solidarity, an extraordinary lesson in humanity."
