Little Mix member Perrie Edwards has spoken candidly and openly for the first time about her difficult relationship with singer Zayn Malik, which she has called "toxic".
In a recent interview for the podcast We Need to Talk, Perrie confessed that when they started dating in 2011, she was very young and thought that whatever she was going through was a normal part of a relationship. But as time went on, and especially after their final breakup in 2015, she realized that many of her experiences were not healthy.
"I was so young that I thought this is how relationships work, a little drama, a little toxicity," she said.
The singer revealed that the experience left deep emotional scars, to the point that for a long time she felt no desire to get close to anyone romantically. She admitted that the wounds of the past also appeared at the beginning of her relationship with current partner, footballer Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
However, she says, Alex was able to show her a new reality, one dominated by calm, trust, and emotional stability. This helped Perrie understand the difference between a healthy relationship and one that was damaging.
A delicate moment, according to her, was when Zayn tried to contact her after his breakup with Gigi Hadid, which made Perrie uncomfortable. But during this period, she had Alex by her side, who reacted calmly and understandingly, giving her the support she once lacked.
Today, Perrie is living a new chapter in her life: she is engaged to Alex, with whom she has a son named Axel, and enjoys a quiet family life.
"I am grateful for everything I went through, because through pain I learned to grow, to become stronger, and to know what a true and healthy relationship looks like," she said at the end of the interview.
