In a recent interview with People, Heidi Klum talked about everything from parenting to career and aging, but it was one statement that got all the attention: the supermodel says she goes topless in front of her children and sees nothing wrong with it.
"I'm always very open with my body. When I'm sunbathing in the yard, I might not have a bra on. I'm European, my kids don't know me differently," Klum said.
This statement comes after the widespread criticism that Heidi received in 2023, when she posed in a lingerie commercial with her daughter, Leni. The commercial was considered by many as "uncomfortable" and "inappropriate" for a mother-daughter relationship, but Heidi did not see it that way.
“I'm proud of my daughter,” she said. “She doesn't mind. We're comfortable.”
However, many people are not at all comfortable with this "open European" philosophy, especially when it comes to the parent-child relationship and healthy boundaries in the family.
Heidi's justification for being topless in front of children as part of European culture is not very convincing, especially when experts warn that nudity in the family, depending on the age and sensitivity of the children, can negatively affect their emotional development.
In the same interview, Heidi also spoke about the most common aspects of being a mother: the constant anxiety about children, the guilt, and the sacrifices she makes every day. "When you're a parent, you go to the back of the line," she says.
But statements about toplessness in the presence of children inevitably shift the focus away from these more human parts and turn the discussion back to the boundaries between "being comfortable with one's body" and "the sensitivity that should be shown in the parent-child relationship."
