Labubu, a small creature with bunny ears, pointed teeth and strange clothing, has become the most unexpected accessory of summer 2025. Hanging on Hermès, Louis Vuitton or Bottega bags, this strange toy has captivated not only influencers and VIPs like Rihanna, Dua Lipa and Lisa from Blackpink, but also the entire Generation Z.

How was Labubu created?

The Labubu doll was created in 2015 by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung. Inspired by Norse mythology, Labubu is part of the “The Monsters” universe and represents a good character who often makes mistakes unintentionally. The dolls come in different shapes and wrapped in costumes depending on a theme and are sold as “blind boxes,” so you never know which one you’re getting until you open it.

Why have they become so famous?

Nostalgia – Many of today's shoppers grew up with anime, toys, and characters from the '90s and 2000s. Now, with more income, they are returning to those simple, happy feelings through dolls like Labubu.

"Kidult" culture – Younger generations are no longer afraid to embrace childhood even as adults. The adult toy market is booming.

The element of mystery – The dolls are elusive and come hidden in “surprise” boxes, creating the feeling of playing with luck. The feeling of excitement from unboxing is like a dose of dopamine.

Will their value increase?

Many can be seen as investments, much like Pokémon cards or Beanie Babies once were. A rare Labubu has sold for over £1,000. Furthermore, the brand is expanding its "universe" with new products like hair clips, AirPods cases and phone accessories.

So, the next time you see a little doll with strange teeth hanging from a luxury bag, maybe you should ask yourself: what is more valuable – the bag, or the Labubu?
