About 600,000 Venezuelans and more than 230,000 Salvadorans already living in the United States can stay legally for another 18 months, the Department of Homeland Security said Friday, just over a week before President-elect Donald Trump takes office with promises of tough immigration policies.

The Department of Homeland Security also extended temporary protected status for more than 103,000 Ukrainians and 1,900 Sudanese already living in the US.

An oil tanker that burned for weeks in the Red Sea after being attacked by Houthi rebels in Yemen and threatening a massive oil spill has been salvaged, a security firm has said.

The tanker MV Sounion carrying one million barrels of crude oil was a disaster in waiting on the main waterway after it was hit and later sabotaged with explosives by the Houthis as part of their solidarity campaign with Hamas over the war in Gaza.

It took months for rescuers to tow the Sounion, put out the fires and offload the remaining crude oil.
