Aside from feeling *great*, evidence suggests that 'The Big O' (with your partner or alone) has a host of benefits. Beyond instant gratification, orgasms can improve your mood, reduce stress, and even improve your sleep.

Here, we've done the legwork to uncover the exact benefits of orgasms (plus, we've got a sexologist's advice on how to achieve one).

Orgasm Benefit #1: Improves skin tone and texture

You've probably heard of the "post-O glow," and research has found that it's more than just a buzzword. A study conducted by LoveHoney shows that 71% noticed this improvement in their skin tone after regular orgasms.

Additionally, 37% saw clearer skin and 9% even reported smaller pores.

According to LoveHoney sexologist Christine Rafe, there's science to back up this orgasm benefit.  

"During pleasure and climax, increased blood circulation increases the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to skin cells," she says.

"This 'post-O glow' is due to improved blood flow and potentially lower sebum production, which can balance oily skin and reduce pore size."

Orgasm Benefit #2: Strengthens the pelvic floor

While we know that Kegels can strengthen the pelvic floor, combining them with orgasms can benefit the bladder, bowels and reproductive organs.

According to a 2022 study, orgasms can improve postpartum pelvic muscle strength for first-time moms. And Core Restore founder Heather Foord says that doesn't happen by accident.

"Those 'pleasure waves' experienced during climax all stem from the rapid, rhythmic contraction and relaxation of the pelvic floor," she says.

On the other hand, poor pelvic floor health can also negatively affect your ability to reach orgasm.

"A pelvic floor that's too tight can lead to painful sex during penetration," she says.

"While a very weak pelvic floor can cause low libido, fewer orgasms and a lack of sensitivity."

Orgasm benefit #3: Relieves stress

"Many people don't realize it, but orgasms act as natural stress relievers, releasing endorphins and oxytocin that can promote relaxation and improve mood," says clinical psychologist Dr Maria-Elena Lukeides.

While Dr Lukeides notes that the psychological impact of peak pleasure can lead to an improved sense of well-being, the benefits may vary based on personal circumstances.

Orgasm Benefit #4: Supports heart health

While heart rates increase during sex and reach their peak, research has found that the benefits of orgasm extend to our heart health.

Specifically, a 2016 study notes that having sex and climaxing can lower blood pressure and lower the risk of heart disease.  

How can you achieve an orgasm?

Want to reap the benefits of orgasm but need help with one? If you're part of the 10-15% of women who have never experienced an orgasm, LoveHoney sexologist Christine Rafe offers these tips.

1. Get to know your body

"Getting to know your body helps build confidence in knowing what you want, making you more likely to experience orgasm," says Christine. Experimenting with different types of touch, pressure, and location will help you find what feels best for you.

2. Include sensual means

"Adding toys, such as a vibrator, or trying new forms of stimulation can increase pleasure," she explains. "Toys are great for exploring new sensations and they can add variety to your experiences." Christine's toy recommendations? For beginners, start with a bullet vibrator and a double stimulator is great if you are experienced.

3. Communicate

Like most things involving a partner, communication during intimacy is essential. "Your partner can't know what your body needs for maximum pleasure unless you tell them," she says. "Sharing your desires and preferences helps your partner better support your pleasure journey, leading to more satisfying experiences."
