Barry Keoghan, in an interview with GQ, has shared some memories of his late mother, Debbie. Keoghan, 31, spoke about his life in Dublin without a father, the death of his mother when he was a child and the years he spent in an orphanage before falling in love with acting.
Already a star thanks to his starring roles in 'Saltburn' and 'The Banshees of Inisherin', the actor said he still feels "hugely lonely" despite his fame and success.
When asked what he thinks about when he's lonely, Keoghan said: "My mother, always. She's been dead for many years, but I always think about her. I always feel her presence, especially after my achievements, because I would to celebrate them with him.”
"She was in the hospital," added the actor.
He admitted that his mother "wasn't that much of a presence in his life" before she died, confessing that "she was struggling with a lot of things".
Elsewhere in the interview, Keoghan recalled life in the day care system before his grandmother, uncle and cousin moved in together after his mother's death. Keoghan said he has decided to buy a house for them.
Keoghan also indicated that he does not see his story as anything unusual for those growing up in Dublin.
Keoghan's mother suffered from drug addiction and died of a heroin overdose when he was 12, The Irish Post reported in 2019. The actor then lived in 13 different day care homes before he and his brother, Eric, to live with their grandmother.
