Israelis bomb the Lebanese city of Baalbek, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Israeli airstrikes hit the eastern Lebanese city of Baalbek on Wednesday, according to Lebanon's state news agency. This happened just hours after the Israeli army issued a warning to evacuate the entire city.
The warning also included the ancient Roman temple complex in the city, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as the area around Baalbek and the main roads.
Residents fled the city en masse, and footage broadcast on local media showed heavy traffic on roads leading out of Baalbek. In some of these images, the sound of powerful explosions and the cries of children and families who were still in the area were heard.
Harris and Trump intensify campaigns in key states for the US presidential election
Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are touring several states, trying to woo voters ahead of next week's presidential election. In Raleigh, North Carolina, Harris declared that "it's time for a new generation of leadership," trying to position himself as a fresh figure against former President Trump.
Trump, 78, is running for the presidency for the third time. Harris said that "this is a moment to close a ten-year chapter of the division that Donald Trump has brought.
Harris also pointed out that a third of American women live in states with "Trump's abortion ban." Trump has been instrumental in selecting the three conservative Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. Since that decision, the abortion issue has mobilized the Democratic base and created challenges for Republicans, while Trump has declared that he will not sign a federal ban on abortion.
The US demands answers from Israel after the devastating attack in Gaza
US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller raised concerns over a serious incident that occurred on Tuesday, following an Israeli attack on a residential building in the northern Gaza city of Beit Lahiya.
According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, about 93 Palestinians have been reported killed or missing as a result of this attack and many others, including children, have been injured. The exact number of victims has not yet been fully determined, but Miller described the attack as "a shocking incident with terrible consequences."
He added that the US has contacted Israeli officials to seek an explanation for the attack, seeking information on how it happened that so many children lost their lives. The move follows an earlier threat by the Biden administration to withdraw military support to Israel within 30 days if humanitarian conditions do not improve.
North Korean troops tense up the Russia-Ukraine war
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the deployment of thousands of troops from North Korea to Russia is expanding the conflict across borders. He declared that "this is one conclusion - the war has been internationalized."
Western leaders have also warned that involving North Korea in a European war could fuel tensions in the Indo-Pacific region. Finnish President Alexander Stubb, during a meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, said that sending troops from North Korea to Russia constitutes an escalation of the war in Ukraine, a move that also contradicts China's position on the conflict.
