Bad sleep is a problem for many people, because it is known that it affects your health, but also the progress of your day and work. According to the National Council on Aging, 30% of adults have symptoms of insomnia, and a new study shows which states have the worst sleep patterns.
The company OneBed analyzed various factors that affect the quality of sleep to find out which ones are the worst sleepers. This includes average hours of sleep per night, air quality index, noise pollution levels, stress levels, monthly Google searches for the phrase "sleep deprivation" and insomnia medications.
Each factor was analyzed to determine the impact on sleep quality and countries were given an overall score taking all these factors into account.
They found that people in Australia have the worst sleeping habits, with an average of 6.24 hours of sleep per night. Australians had a high volume of Google searches for treatments dedicated to sleep problems and high levels of noise pollution.
Australia was followed by the United States of America, which had the lowest average sleep duration of just 5.70 hours per night. The US also had over 1.1 million average monthly searches for "sleep deprivation" and "insomnia remedies" and high levels of noise pollution. More than one-third of Americans report getting less than seven hours of sleep in a 24-hour period. 13.5% of adults over 18 have expressed that they feel tired or exhausted most of the day and 10% have insomnia so great that it affects their daily activities.
According to the study, this is the ranking of the places where people sleep the worst in the world:
#1 Australia
#2 United States
#3 Philippines
#4 United Kingdom
#5 Mexico
#6 Singapore
#7 India
#8 South Korea
#9 Brazil
#10 Israel
Lack of sleep has many consequences for people's health, increasing the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, obesity and type 2 diabetes, according to the Mayo Clinic.
