We know that food has a lot of power in people's lives, not only in terms of health and the values ??we give to the body. But can a certain food regimen or diet slow down aging?
Science says there is a possibility, but especially by focusing on the health of your brain. According to a recent study in "Annals of Neurology", the Mediterranean diet combined with the DASH (diet to control hypertension), both help reduce the risk of dementia and slow aging.
What is the MIND diet?
The MIND diet is a combination of the Mediterranean and DASH diets.
"The main components of this diet are 'brain foods' like nuts, berries, olive oil and green leafy vegetables," says Martha Theran, director of the Pritikin Longevity Center.
"These foods are rich in nutrients and antioxidants that support brain function and help prevent cognitive decline with age," she continues.
According to nutritionist Nicola Guess, the "MIND" diet contains the following foods that should be consumed as follows:
- Whole grains: 3 portions per day
-Green vegetables without leaves: 1 portion per day
-Green leafy vegetables: 6+ servings per week
-Nuts: 5+ servings per week
-Beans: 4+ servings per week
- Berries: 2+ servings per week
-Chicken: 2+ meals per week
-Fish: 1+ meals per week
Can the MIND diet help slow down the aging process?
A study published in the journal "Alzheimer's & Dementia" revealed the fact that individuals who followed the "MIND" diet had a lower risk (by 53%) of developing Alzheimer's.
However, this indicator does not "seal" the absolute impact of this diet in slowing down aging, since among the people who follow it as a diet there are those who prefer berries more than nuts or other foods, that if they are not consumed properly detailed as defined by the "MIND" diet, do not have the same effect on this process.
