Trouble at Microsoft: Global internet outage causes chaos

A problem at Microsoft has brought chaos to airports, banks, railways and businesses around the world, as many services went offline, paralyzing the world and millions of people who wanted to bank, travel and more.

Air transport in London, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, etc. was directly affected, stopping flights, and hospitals also had problems, as a large number of employees could not access their computers. In the UK there was a Sky News blackout and the NHS GP booking system was also down.

Microsoft experts linked the problem to a new software update carried out by cyber security firm Crowdsrike that has affected computer systems around the world. Experts said that it will take a few days to normalize the situation, as each PC will be adjusted manually.

Microsoft confirmed it was investigating a problem with its services and apps, and warned of a 'service degradation', which meant users might not be able to get many of the company's popular services, which are used by millions of businesses and people around the world.

Among the firms affected are Ryanair, Europe's largest airline, which said on its website: "Potential network-wide disruption (Friday 19 July) due to a global third-party system outage. the third. We advise passengers to arrive at the airport three hours before their flight date to avoid any issues."

In the US, flights were grounded due to communication problems that appeared to be related to the outage. American Airlines, Delta and United Airlines were among the airlines affected. Berlin airport temporarily suspended all flights on Monday, while in Australia, Melbourne airport notified customers that it was "experiencing a global technology issue that is affecting check-in procedures for some airlines".

GP practices in the UK said they are unable to access patient records or book appointments due to the internet outage. Operations took to social media to report that they could not access the EMIS Web system. The National Pharmacy Association also confirmed that UK services may be affected.

Alan Woodward, a professor of cyber security at the University of Surrey, said the outage appears to have been caused by an IT product called Croëdstrike Falcon, which monitors the security of large PC networks and downloads some of the monitoring software to any device.

“The product is used by large organizations that have a significant number of computers to ensure that everything is monitored. "Unfortunately, if all the computers are lost, they may not be able to function or only at a very low level of service," adding that fixing the problem could take several days.

“The main frustration is that fixing the problem will require manual intervention on every affected PC. This will mean major delays in recovery and therefore disruption for the next few days," he said.
