The grass is (not) always greener on the other side: How to stop comparing

We have all experienced that feeling when it seems that everything around us is better than what we have. A stronger friendship, a better job, a more devoted partner – all these seem to be within reach for others, but not for us.

This phenomenon known as "the grass is always greener on the other side" is a common illusion that makes us feel dissatisfied with our lives.

Why does this phenomenon happen?

The truth is that when we compare ourselves to others, we only see the outer parts of their lives; those parts they choose to share. Social media adds to this problem, bombarding us with images of other people's happy moments and achievements, while their everyday reality remains hidden.

Consequences of constant comparisons

Constant comparisons can lead to resentment. They make us feel that we are never good enough and that we are always missing something to be happy. This feeling can negatively affect our mental and emotional health, leading to anxiety and/or depression.

How to stop comparing and evaluate your life

1. Focus on yourself

Every time you find yourself starting to compare yourself to others, stop and think about your accomplishments. Keep a journal where you write every day about the things that make you happy and about your achievements.

2. Take a break from social media

Spend less time on social media and more time engaging in activities that bring you joy and inner peace.

3. Set personal goals

Set clear and achievable goals for yourself. Focus on your own development and don't worry about what others are doing.

4. Accept that no one is perfect

Remember that every person has their own challenges and problems, even if you don't see them. No one's life is perfect and everyone is dealing with something.

5. Create healthy relationships

Surround yourself with people who support and inspire you. These relationships can help you feel more secure and valued.
