Raise your hand if you haven't once in your life blamed yourself for the bread you forgot in your toaster. But what if we told you that this is one of the smallest things for which you should be victimized, because thanks to this situation you are happy and healthy today? In short: the theory of toast!

This theory is simple: The idea that something as small as toasting can become the cause of saving your life or can cause something good to happen to you. Maybe, those five minutes that this process took saved you from a car accident or maybe those minutes made you leave the house a little later and suddenly meet friends that you haven't seen in a while.

What is this theory?

Really, it's a metaphor for any of the little inconveniences you might face during the day, like traffic, buying shoes, forgetting your email password, the iPhone not charging, the fact there's no ice in the fridge, etc.

"The theory of burnt bread is a phenomenon that shows that a setback can cause us to avoid greater harm," says clinical psychologist Courtney Morgan. "I like to think of it as a mental method of getting back on track right after something goes wrong."

In other words, this theory is a reminder to change your mindset. Instead of looking at this episode as a bad way to start the day, you can be thankful that it didn't bring about bigger upsets.

The benefits of applying this theory to your life

It's normal to have bad days sometimes. But this theory tells us how to resist the spiral when we encounter an obstacle, as it helps us understand what obstacles we can experience. The theory of burnt bread also helps to practice gratitude, which allows you to be more "mindful" in your thoughts and actions.

How to practice it?

The next time you find yourself upset or frustrated by a concern in your life, try reframing your thoughts by telling yourself why you are grateful for the concern. You can do this by talking it out loud to yourself or writing the thoughts in a journal. Of course, this may take some time, but once you start shifting your thoughts from a negative to a positive approach, it will make it easier to practice the theory of burnt bread right when chaos occurs.
