Why are insects being adopted as food?

Singapore's state food agency (SFA) has approved 16 species of insects as edible for sale and consumption.

Insects approved by the SFA include grasshoppers, mealworms and some types of beetles.

As in many other countries of the world, eating insects in Singapore remains a novelty, but it is possible that many other countries will follow suit. Why?

Researchers have recorded more than 2,100 edible insect species – many of which contain important vitamins and minerals and serve as a source of protein.

"Insects are a neglected source of protein and a way to combat climate change," according to a 2022 report by the World Economic Forum. "Consumption of animal protein is a source of greenhouse gas and climate change. (Consumption of) insects can offset climate change in many ways," the researchers said.
