Surely you have also seen the birthday videos circulating on the Reddit or TikTok platforms, where most of the chicks appear crying while blowing out the candles on the cake along with the popular hit "It's my birthday".
Crying during birthday moments has become a part of life, but we still don't know if they are tears of happiness, sadness, existential crisis of being a year older, so birthday crying is a real phenomenon.
Although crying on your birthday is very normal, that doesn't mean the feeling is normal, according to Anna Harris, clinical mental health counsellor. "A lot of people who cry on their birthday end up crying on other people's birthdays because they just feel bad," she says.
But why do chicks cry on their birthday?
Asking someone why they cry on their birthday is a lot like asking someone why the sky is blue. However, experts have several reasons why this phenomenon occurs:
#1 You feel disappointed with the way the birthday went: Despite the fact that this is a special day, people often have high expectations for the organization, but also the attention and wishes they receive from relatives, colleagues, loved ones, etc.
#2 Feeling Forgotten or Unimportant: Birthdays are supposed to be a special day when we feel ready to celebrate in every dimension. "But not everyone has the people around them to do that," says psychologist Mary Lawrence. This naturally brings frustration and tears.
#3 You are anxious because you feel like you are getting old: Birthdays are a reminder that aging and the passing of time are inevitable. For many people, it can be scary to think about the future and all the unknowns that come with it.
#4 You are overwhelmed with love and gratitude: When you feel surrounded by the most important people in your life and reflect on all the good things you have in life, it is normal to feel overwhelmed by emotions.
How to avoid crying on your birthday
Simply, manage your emotions! After all, emotions are what make us human. Allow yourself to feel what is a release for you, whether by crying, drinking a glass, eating or blowing out candles, the choice is yours.
