A mild sunburn heals within a week or a maximum of 10 days. Shasa Hu, a dermatologist and professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, says that more severe burns take up to two weeks to heal.
Although you can't necessarily speed up this process, there are some ways to ease it so that the skin returns to normal as soon as possible.
What causes sunburn?
"Ultraviolet radiation energy damages the skin's DNA, leading to an inflammatory response from the body," says dermatologist Samer Jaber. These rays lead to the death of skin cells and as a result redness, swelling and pain.
Here are eight simple remedies you can do at home to save your skin from burns:
-Make a compress with cold water
Wet a clean cloth with cold water and apply it to the burned area five times a day for about 10 minutes to cool your skin. This helps reduce the sensation of heat that comes from burning.
-Take a cold shower
Take a cold shower and dry your body carefully, leaving the burned area a little wetter so the skin can absorb any moisturizer you apply.
-Try to apply a little aloe vera
Put the aloe vera in the refrigerator and use it on the burned area as a compress. You will see that the skin will normalize quickly and you will not feel much heat.
-Take an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication
Anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen reduce the inflammation and pain of sunburn by blocking the action of other external factors.
-Get in a tub filled with oatmeal
Ground oatmeal or finely ground oats are another soothing ingredient that can reduce sunburn symptoms. Soak in a soothing bath for about 20 minutes to hydrate and nourish your skin.
-Apply some milk or yogurt
A piece soaked in milk or yogurt helps with sunburned skin, as it has pain-relieving properties from this burn.
-Stay hydrated
Sunburns require you to drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and not feel sunburned.
-Avoid further sun exposure
Once your skin is burned, it's important to avoid sun exposure until it heals. Dermatologists suggest staying in a dry and comfortable air-conditioned environment.
