There are many benefits that couples get from sex: burning calories, boosting the immune system, releasing dopamine, so in short, sex is good. It even goes beyond affecting the slowing down of the aging process, according to a study published in the journal "Psychoneuroendocrinology". It found that having sex at least once a week is linked to having longer telomeres, the protective cap on DNA that determines cell lifespan.
Researchers tracked the sex lives of 129 mothers in a couple relationship. Women gave daily reports of satisfaction and how often they were intimate with their partners. The researchers also took blood samples from the women, analyzing the cells for indicators of aging. They found that women who had sex with their partners during the week had longer telomeres compared to those who did not have sex.
This type of study only shows an association and cannot prove that sexual activity was the cause of longer telomere length.
Telomeres are vital for healthy aging
The study's findings show that sex can be beneficial when it comes to protecting telomeres, meaning cells can live longer. Researchers have linked shorter telomeres to serious health issues such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Longer telomeres seem to help prevent disease, beyond the fact that having sex once a week is more than beneficial.
