Does eating carrots change skin color? Here's what the experts say

Nowadays it is very common to have endless trends on TikTok and one of the most discussed coincides with the theory that eating carrots affects the tan of the skin, or makes it have an orange color. The whole hypothesis started when people on TikTok expressed that eating 3 large carrots a day, for some time (practically years), can totally change your skin color, darkening it.

Since then, various people on the app have tried it and documented their experience, suggesting that these changes are real.

How does the truth stand?

Short answer: Yes, carrots change skin tone.

The long answer: According to expert Azza Halim, carrots contain beta carotene, a compound that, if taken in high doses, can affect skin color. This phenomenon is called carotenemia and coincides with skin pigmentation, giving it an orange tone. "This can happen in some people who eat a lot of orange vegetables, like carrots, squash and sweet potatoes," says Jessica Sepel, nutritionist.

If you're confused about how it works, let us explain! "Beta carotene is a pigment (lipochrome) and beta carotene added to the bloodstream can stick to the top layer of the skin, darkening it, or giving it an orange pigment," says Jennifer Levine, surgeon. of facial surgeries. However, this phenomenon does not affect all areas of the body equally.

"The discoloration usually occurs where the skin is thicker, such as on the hands, soles of the feet, or knees and elbows," says Dr. Levine.

How many carrots do you have to eat to notice this difference?

Dr. Levine and Dr. Halim say you need to eat anywhere from 20-50 mg of beta carotene per day to see any change in your skin tone. Three large carrots contain approximately 20-24 mg. So you'll need to eat 3-10 carrots a day for at least a few weeks to see noticeable changes.

Is it safe to eat carrots to change skin pigment?

Now that I know how it works, the next question is: "Is it safe to eat carrots to change skin pigmentation?". Dr Halim says such high doses can lead to vitamin A toxicity.

"Usually, if you notice skin discoloration, it's best to reduce or stop eating carrots. All foods and vitamins have benefits if consumed within moderate limits, only when they are consumed in large amounts, they can cause various side effects."

Experts say that it is recommended to consume everything in moderation. It is important to consume many vegetables, with different types of colors, not focusing on eating only orange vegetables.
