Ukraine accepts immediate 1-month ceasefire proposed by US
Ukraine has agreed to accept an immediate 30-day ceasefire proposed by the US, pending Moscow's acceptance of the same terms, according to a joint statement by officials on Tuesday evening.
"Both delegations agreed to appoint their negotiating teams and immediately begin negotiations towards a sustainable peace that ensures the long-term peace of Ukraine."
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who will now take the proposal to Moscow, told reporters that "the ball is in the Russian court" and that if the Kremlin does not agree to the deal, "unfortunately we will know what the obstacle to peace is."
Portugal's parliament rejects no-confidence motion, topples government
The motion of confidence in the government was rejected by the Assembly on Tuesday evening, about a year after the 2024 legislative elections. The PS, Chega, Bloco de Esquerda (BE), PCP, Livre and PAN voted against, bringing down the government. The Liberal Initiative (IL) was the only opposition party to vote in favor.
During the debate, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro made several calls to the socialist parties to find a solution, but the SP did not back down.
The center-right Social Democrats also submitted a request to suspend the debate so that the prime minister could speak privately with the opposition leader, but to no avail.
Trump says he will double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50%
US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he intends to double planned tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum from 25% to 50%.
In a post on his social media platform "Truth Social," he said the tariffs would take effect Wednesday, calling the decision a response to price increases Ontario imposed on electricity exported to the United States.
Trump is facing increased pressure to show he has a legitimate plan to grow the economy instead of pushing it into a recession.
Von der Leyen: "EU security in crisis"
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen spoke at the EP plenary session on RearmE, where she stressed that the union countries must unite in the face of the crisis they are facing. She said that now is the time to create a common defense.
"Peace in our Union can no longer be taken for granted. We are facing a European security crisis. But we know that Europe has always been built on crises. So this is the time for peace through strength. It is the time for a common defense. More courage will be needed in the coming weeks and months. And the most difficult choices lie ahead. The time for illusions is over," said Von der Leyen.
