Today, International Women's Day is celebrated all over the world. Not only will the achievements of women be celebrated, but the obstacles they face day by day will also be highlighted. If you want to get involved or understand the meaning, here's everything you need to know.
When did it start?
Although recognized by the United Nations in 1977, Women's Day has its origins in the early 20th century, when labor protests began in North America and Europe. During World War I, members of the women's movement in Russia celebrated the first Women's Day on March 8, 1913 to protest the war. A year later, on the same date, women across Europe gathered in solidarity rallies.
What happens on March 8?
After World War II, almost all countries began to use March 8 as Women's Rights Day. Then, on March 8, endless events and marches are held to celebrate women's achievements and fight for equality.
International Women's Day focuses not only on celebrating their extraordinary contribution and great strength in society, but is also a reminder to respect their rights, starting from gender equality, reproductive rights and awareness of violence towards women.
