We know what people want at the end of a long and tiring day? Make yourself comfortable on the sofa or sit in a chair, while raising your hands in the air. If you do this too, and have even turned it into a habit, experts think there is a biological reason behind it.
According to doctor Karan Raj, this action can be a form of comfort or actually something that breaks the physiological tension in the neck or shoulder muscles, improving blood flow and minimizing nerve compression.
But it can also be a form of self-simulating behavior that the doctor says helps regulate the sensory aspect or reduce sensory overload that leads a person to complete relaxation.
If you tend to do this while lying in bed, Dr. Raj says it's because your body can automatically adopt this comfort position to help you relax or sleep. He said that if you tend to do this often, it becomes a learned behavior that you immediately associate with comfort, taking it simply as a "relax" and calm button.
Whatever your reason for doing this, at the end of the day there's nothing wrong with practicing!
