According to experts, the loss of keratin plays a very large role, along with a number of other internal and external factors such as malnutrition, slower blood circulation and excessive exposure to water.
Why do nails change with age?
"Nails age just like the rest of our body," explains dermatologist Pooja Rambhia. "Age-related nail changes are mainly due to blood circulation, injuries, infections and health conditions."
Another culprit? Keratin loss. "Our nails, like hair, are made up mainly of keratin proteins and as we age, this naturally falls off," says Rambhia.
The speed of nail growth also changes over the years, which can significantly affect their health. After the age of 40, the process of nail growth slows down quite a bit, while exposure to environmental factors worsens the situation even more.
How to take care of nails as you age?
Nail care is no different from skin and hair care. If you want beautiful nails even though age is not in your favor, focus on an inside-out approach, i.e. a good diet and daily care.
A balanced diet that contains protein, vitamins and minerals, including iron, is what you need to "invest" in the health of your nails.
All experts agree that hydration is an important step when it comes to their health. "Frequent moisturizing of the nails and surrounding skin, along with drinking enough water, helps maintain hydration levels and prevent brittle nails from forming," concludes Dermatology.
