Beautiful holiday-themed movies, evenings spent next to the decorated Christmas tree and the burning fireplace can be the most beautiful postcard for couples spending the holidays together. But, beware! This can have unpredictable consequences in your relationship.
Relationship experts warn all couples not to get too caught up in the seasonal glow of the holidays; a common mistake otherwise known as "tinselling".
What is "tinselling" and why it is dangerous for the relationship
Coined by Tina Wilson, dating expert and founder of dating app Wingman, the term tinselling is inspired by the twinkling holiday lights that often keep couples from realizing they're going through a crisis.
"Couples tend not to sever their relationships during the holiday season because social and family pressures for a sense of togetherness, love and happiness at this time of year override genuine feelings," explains the expert.
For some, the practice of tinselling may seem like a temporary solution to give yourself a break as a couple. But the truth is that the underlying problems in the relationship persist and although they can be put aside because of the holidays, it can complicate the situation later.
By avoiding addressing issues during the holidays just because it's a holiday period, you deprive your relationship of the opportunity to resolve any misunderstandings that may arise at the most inopportune moments.
Honest and open communication is critical to the survival of any relationship, especially during the beautiful but stressful holiday season.
