European countries where it is better to be a woman: How Albania ranks

 

The Women, Peace and Security Index 2023 was released on Tuesday and ranked countries around the world in terms of the status of women.

The Peace Research Institute in Oslo (PRIO), which co-authored the study , found that many of the world's best places to be a woman are in Europe, although there is considerable variation across the region.

The study noted that societies where women are doing well are more peaceful, democratic, prosperous and better prepared to adapt to climate change.

PRIO relied on data measuring inclusion, justice and safety for women. They used a total of 13 indicators ranging from education and employment laws to perceptions of safety and violence.

Denmark tops the 2023 ranking. Ukraine is at the bottom of the European ranking. Before Ukraine, Kosovo ranks. Kosovo's low score is attributed to poor education and employment outcomes for women, alongside "very high levels of maternal mortality," the PRIO said.

Albania ranks 34th in Europe, one step above Greece and 45/177 in the world. Referring to the data, in Albania there has been an increase in the average years of schooling of girls, in the financial inclusion of women, their participation in parliament as well as in women's perception of community safety.
