The way we live has an impact not only on our health, but also on our mental state. According to a recent study, in which professors from Cambridge University (England) and Fudan University (Shanghai) participated, it was discovered that there are seven lifestyles that are related to the prevention of depression and the reduction of the risk of this disease, even if it it's a family story.
The authors of the study published in the journal Nature Mental Health said the reasons why people experience depression are complex, from lifestyle, genes and individual circumstances.
Data from a biomedical database called the UK Biobank studied over 290,000 people over a nine-year period, including 13,000 with depression. The professors studied everything from genetic data, to lifestyle, brain structure, immune system including brain MRI scans of 33,000 participants.
The study's findings detailed the fact that having a poorer lifestyle affects the immune system and metabolism, which in turn increases the risk of depression.
The co-author of the study, Dr. Christelle Langley, from Cambridge University's department of Psychiatry, said: "We know that a healthy lifestyle is very important for our physical health, but it's just as important for our mental health. This leads directly to a healthy immune system and good metabolism".
7 lifestyle factors associated with a lower risk of depression:
-Moderate consumption of alcohol
-Healthy diet
-Regular physical activity
-Seven to nine hours of sleep per night
- Not smoking
- Minimizing sedentary life
- Strengthening social ties
Seven to nine hours of sleep per night has the greatest effect on the issue of depression.
