Identified as the transitional phase before entering menopause, perimenopause marks the end of a woman's reproductive years and is characterized by an irregular menstrual cycle. Often ignored or undiagnosed, perimenopause can bring great changes and challenges. With symptoms ranging from hot flashes and poor sleep to mood swings, this stage in a woman's life should be well known.
A positive way to influence the state of perimenopause is the lifestyle and food diet. "Everything starts with a change you have to make in the way you eat. Yummy, high-fat, high-sugar, high-salt foods should actually be taken off the menu," says Naomi Potter, author of Menopausing, to Vogue.
Stimulants such as caffeine and alcohol should also be avoided where possible, as they can worsen or cause hot flashes, while spicy foods lead to inflammation.
Whole foods
It goes without saying that the basic diet should be healthy, fresh and balanced if you are facing perimenopause. This means plenty of fruit, fresh vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats, good quality protein and fibre. Eating saturated protein and carbohydrates, such as lean meats, fish, oats and sweet potatoes, is a good way to keep your blood sugar level balanced.

Another side effect of declining estrogen levels is a reduction in bone density and mass, both of which can lead to osteoporosis. To reduce your risk, make sure you get enough calcium, magnesium, and vitamins D and K in your diet. Milk is a good choice, but so are dark leafy greens like kale and cabbage.
Products with healthy fats
Mood swings, depression, and increased irritability are all part of the perimenopausal experience. To maintain mental balance, try to include plenty of healthy fats in your diet. If fish isn't on the menu, try adding avocados, eggs, chia seeds and olive oil.
