German artist Boris Eldagsen admitted he entered the Sony World Photography Awards to stir up controversy. He is turning down the prestigious award in the Creative category after saying he created the photo using artificial intelligence.
The winning photo featured two women from different generations. He said he applied castile with this photograph to find out if the competitions for images generated by artificial intelligence would be prepared.
"We, the photography world, need an open discussion," said Eldagsen. “A discussion about what we want to consider photography and what we don't. Is the photography umbrella big enough to invite AI images in? By refusing the award, I hope to accelerate this debate."
He said it was a "historic moment" as it was the first time such an image had won a prestigious international photography competition, adding: "How many of you knew or suspected it was created by artificial intelligence?"
A spokesman for the World Photography Organization said Eldagsen had confirmed the co-creation of the image using artificial intelligence and they gave him the award because they are open to such creations.
“Artificial intelligence imagery and photography should not compete with each other in an award like this. They are different entities. Artificial intelligence is not photography. Therefore, I will not accept the award," the artist emphasized.
