According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), rates of anxiety, depression, anger and general stress have increased among children and adolescents. Given these daunting challenges, as parents, you need, now more than ever, to help your children become adept at meeting life's demands.
There are many essential skills that children must learn to have a productive life. Some examples include communication, technology, financial literacy, writing and organizational skills.
Psychologists can list many qualities that children and people in general need to succeed in a competitive world, but if we had to boil them down to just two qualities they would be:
- To teach children how to regulate and manage their emotions
- How to solve problems through challenges
In short, self-regulation of emotions means that your child can calm down and deal with his feelings on his own. These children can manage stressful situations or know how to get out of them.
Solving problems involves accepting them, reflecting on ways of managing them, and implementing better solutions.
The good news is that you can teach and inspire your child to regulate emotions and solve problems (as many "problems" as a child can have at certain stages of life and growth).
4 ways you can help your child regulate emotions and solve problems
1. Raise them with the mindset of self-care and self-development
The more your child sees you practice self-care for your emotional health, the more he will instinctively know to take care of himself. Be committed to continually working on your calming and problem-solving skills.
2. Use calming techniques
3. Dëgjoni. Vërtet dëgjoni
When children feel heard, they feel valued and their self-esteem increases. Listening to children helps foster open and honest communication, which can lead to more positive relationships and a deeper understanding of their perspectives. When children are allowed to express themselves, they can feel empowered to find solutions to their problems.
4. Talk constructively with yourself and them
Children learn by observing the behavior of those around them, so it is important to transparently and actively demonstrate calm behavior in all situations.
