According to an annual report by Post Office Travel Money – which took into account the total cost of travel, including drinks, meals, two nights' three-star hotel accommodation, sightseeing and city transport – Venice and Amsterdam are the most expensive cities. European cities to visit.
Rising accommodation costs have contributed to rising costs in these cities. Accommodation costs rose by 20% in 15 of the 20 cities surveyed, however there was a larger increase in Amsterdam (104%), Barcelona (67%) and Paris (62%).
However, the cost of eating out has fallen in half of the cities surveyed. The average meal for two in Athens is cheaper, €45 compared to €162 in Stockholm - the most expensive.
Cultural experiences in Dubrovnik are the most expensive: visits to museums, galleries and historical sites cost €66.
Other expensive cities are Dublin, Copenhagen and Paris.
The cheapest cities are Athens and Lisbon.
