Too tired on weekdays for 6am workout sessions or crowded evening sessions at the gym? Good news: Some weekend exercise is just as good as activity throughout the week, a new study has found.
US researchers tracked more than 350,000 people over 10 years to look at people who only exercised in one or two sessions - the so-called "weekend warriors".
The World Health Organization (WHO) currently recommends that adults do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week. Or you can do 75 minutes of vigorous activity, such as running or swimming.
Many of the study participants achieved this amount within a week, but some achieved it in one or two sessions.
The study, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine , suggests that as long as people get the recommended amount of exercise per week, it doesn't really matter when they exercise or what they do.
"Data from this large study suggest that individuals who engage in various patterns of physical activity, whether weekend warriors or regularly active, experience lower all-cause and cause-specific mortality rates than inactive individuals," the authors write. .
