You probably already know that you need more sleep. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that adults get at least seven hours of sleep, and more than a third of Americans rarely reach this point. But the actual amount that many need to feel really relaxed and healthy is eight hours, and it may even take up to nine hours. Moreover, sleep can often feel less important than other valuable self-care - for example, waking up early to exercise or staying up later to enjoy some rest after a stressful day. So should consistent and quality sleep be the first? Yes.

Sleep is the foundation of physical and mental health. In his book, Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams, neuroscientist Matthew Walker writes:

Wonderful discovery! Scientists have discovered a revolutionary new treatment that makes you live longer. It improves your memory and makes you more creative. It makes you look more attractive. Keeps you weak and reduces cravings for food. Protects you from cancer and dementia. It protects against colds and flu. It lowers the risk of heart attacks and strokes, not to mention diabetes. You will even feel happier, less depressed and less anxious. Are you interested?

If a pill were to offer the same benefits we get from sleep, we would take it - without question.

Many people think they are part of the population that needs six hours or less of sleep. But since research shows that less than 1 percent of the population has the magic gene of "short sleep", it is better to assume that you are not part of that refined group. (This population also reports good mood, steady energy and optimistic mood - happy as they are.)
