Earthquake in Morocco: Macron tries to calm tensions
French President Emmanuel Macron has tried to ease tensions with Morocco over the supply of humanitarian aid, following a deadly earthquake centered in the Atlas Mountains.
Moroccan authorities said earlier this week that they had "responded favourably" to offers of help from search and rescue teams from Britain, Spain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, but refused to accept help from other countries. including France.
In a video addressed to the Moroccan public posted on social media, Macron said it was a sovereign matter for Morocco whether to accept France's aid or not. Earlier, at the G20 in Delhi, he said France had done "everything it could do" and that aid would be delivered as soon as it was needed.
Tensions between the two nations existed even before the earthquake. Morocco has not sent ambassadors to France for months and Macron has canceled several planned state visits to Rabat. French colonial rule over Morocco in the years 1912-1956 has affected the relationship between the two countries.
