The Technical Committee of Experts announced that cases of infection with the Omicron variant have been identified.
At a conference this morning (December 23), the chairwoman of the Technical Committee of Experts, Mira Rakacolli, said that two cases with Omicron have been confirmed after analyzing samples in Germany. "However, the Delta variant continues to prevail in Albania," he added.
Rakacolli stressed that the epidemiological situation in the last 2 weeks is "more or less stable" both in daily cases and in cases that require hospital care.
Referring to recent studies , people infected with Omicron have approximately 15 to 20% less risk in terms of hospitalization compared to the Delta variant, researchers from Imperial College London said on Wednesday. According to the data, there is also a reduced risk of longer hospital stays, where cases with Omicron are 40-45% less likely to be hospitalized for one night or more.
However, although it is good news, it is not enough to not have anti-Covid measures because the rapid spread of Omicron means that a large number of infections can lead to high number of hospitalizations.
