"Long Covid" syndrome is a new definition in health systems, which is dealing with the treatment of people who have been left with health consequences from coronavirus infection.
In Albania, it is estimated that about 20 thousand people are currently in the "long Covid" phase. They suffer from injuries in the form of fibrosis in the lungs, physical disability, mental, nervous disorders, chronic fatigue, depression, etc.
Such consequences last 4-5 months, but even longer after the infection has passed.
From the beginning of the pandemic, until mid-October 2021, Albania counts over 175 thousand people officially infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome Sars-Cov-2 and with about 10 thousand additional deaths from March 2020 to March 2021, according to data from INSTAT.
A portion of the infected will turn into chronically ill.
According to estimates from the Lung Treatment Polyclinic, about 20% of patients suffer from a long chronic fatigue, which lasts over time. Patients with these symptoms do not feel as well as they did almost a year after they passed the infection.
Depression and affecting the nervous system is one of the main symptoms of "long Covid" in Albania, as well as around the world. In the first quarter of 2021, hospitalizations in psychiatric hospital wards increased by 68% compared to the first quarter of 2020, according to official sources from the Ministry of Health.
