Facebook, which faced harsh criticism from lawmakers and users over its plan to develop an Instagram for children, announced it would suspend work on the project .
"While we believe building Instagram Kids is the right thing to do, Instagram and its parent company Facebook will re-evaluate the project at a later date. Temporary Instagram will continue to focus on teen safety and expanding parental supervision features for teens, "the company said in a statement.
The application was intended for children aged 10 to 12 years. The termination of the project comes after the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report, in which it was stated that Facebook was aware that Instagram has been harmful to teenagers.
According to the documents, Facebook was aware of the problems since 2019 and the platform knew that "Instagram was worsening" the issue of body image for one in three teenage girls ".
The WSJ claimed that Facebook, which bought Instagram in 2012, ignored reports with data like "13% of British teens and 6% of American teens wanted to kill themselves and a significant part of the source of their depression was Instagram.
