A nutritious diet containing whole grains can control weight, blood pressure and blood sugar levels, according to a new study.
"Eating whole grains as part of a healthy diet brings health benefits and helps us lose weight or keep it in control with age," said study lead author Nicola McKeoën, a scientist on the team. nutritional epidemiology at the Human Food Research Center at Tufts University.
"These data suggest that people who eat more whole grains are better able to control their blood sugar and blood pressure over time," McKeoan said. "Managing these risk factors as we age can help protect against heart disease."
In the study, which was published in The Journal of Nutrition, researchers followed 3,100 people in their 50s at regular four-year intervals for 18 years, thus enabling tracking of changes in eating habits over time. .
Compared to people who ate less than half a serving of whole grains, people who ate three or more servings daily over time had a lower increase in waist size and a greater decrease in triglyceride levels during the period four-year-old.
A single serving of cereal is a slice of bread, or half a cup of oats, or half a cup of coffee with rice.
