Zara, Anthropologie and Patowl are accused of cultural misappropriation

Mexico has accused the Zara, Anthropologie and Patowl brands of cultural appropriation, claiming that they have used design patterns of indigenous groups in their clothing, to no benefit to the communities.

The culture ministry said in a statement that it had asked the three companies for a "public explanation of how they could privatize the collective property". The ministry said the companies were inspired by models created in the southwestern state of Oaxaca and called for the benefits to be given to communities.

Zara, which is owned by the world’s largest clothing retailer, Inditex, is accused of using a unique design for the San Juan Colorado native Mixteca community in a mint-colored dress with green embroidery.

The culture ministry claims the model "reflects early symbols related to the environment, history and community worldview" and was similar to traditional clothing, part of women's identity and took local craftsmen at least a month to make.

Inditex said in a statement sent to Reuters: "The design in question was in no way borrowed or influenced by Mexican artisans."
