Kim Kardashian is being sued by former staff, who accuse her of various violations in the workplace, including unpaid wages and failure to provide adequate leave or meal breaks at work. In a lawsuit filed Monday, horticultural and maintenance workers who worked at Kardashian's Los Angeles home accused her of failing to pay overtime and cover expenses as well as withholding a percentage of her salary for taxes. without reporting their employment to the tax authorities.
One worker says he was fired after raising concerns about overtime pay, meal breaks and tax issues. Another, aged 16, says he worked more than the maximum hours allowed for a minor under California labor laws.
"Payroll and other workplace violations are a widespread problem in Los Angeles," said Frank Kim, a lawyer representing former staff members, in an interview with Page Six. "My firm is currently investigating other possible violations against these defendants, as well as other powerful families and businesses on behalf of ordinary workers."
Frank Kim also reportedly represents plaintiffs in the lawsuits against Kanye West, who was accused of failing to pay wages to workers involved in his 2019 Hollywood Bowl opera, Nebuchadnezzar.
In response to the recent lawsuit, a spokesman for the Keeping Up star with the Kardashians points out that a third party person is responsible for the violations.
"Kim is not a party to the agreement made between 'seller' and their employees," they say. "Therefore she is not responsible for how the 'seller' (manager or employment company) manages the business and the agreements she has made with the staff. She hopes the issue with the workers will be resolved amicably soon."
